Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights

Wisconsin Classic Stage brings an experimental opera experience to Milwaukee this Halloween season with Gertrude Stein's "Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights." This immersive production uses lighting, live music, and Stein's distinctive language to tell the story of Faustus, who has traded his soul for artificial light, and his encounter with a woman named Marguerite Ida and Helena Annabel. The piece explores timeless questions about knowledge, identity, and what we lose when we pursue power without restraint—themes that feel surprisingly relevant today. The production runs about an hour without intermission or blackout, creating a continuous, immersive environment throughout. Seating is strictly limited to 75 people per night, with just 25 reserved seats at $25 and 50 standing-room spots at $10. The show is recommended for ages 13 and up; younger children won't be admitted.
