Bring your family to Retzer Nature Center for a fun fall tradition: create a homemade scarecrow at home and display it along the scenic Blue Trail for others to enjoy during their autumn walks. This is a completely free, volunteer activity open to families, schools, churches, scout groups, and community organizations. Simply build your scarecrow following the provided guidelines (keep it family-friendly), print and attach the ID card, then install it on the stakes along the trail between mid-September and late October. Once your scarecrow is in place, visitors can enjoy a self-guided hike through fall foliage, exploring the Blue Trail loop from near the Children's Garden to the scenic Retzer pond. The woodchipped trails feature some slopes and aren't lit after dark, so plan your walk during daylight hours. Whether you participate by creating a scarecrow or simply strolling to admire the creative displays others have made, it's a wonderful way to celebrate the season outdoors while the center handles everything—no registration needed, and it won't cost you a thing.
