Scarecrow Lane
Free Halloween scarecrow-themed walk through Retzer Nature Center.
Head to Retzer Nature Center this fall for a self-guided walk along the Blue Trail to see creative scarecrow displays scattered throughout the grounds. Kids and adults alike will enjoy strolling through autumn foliage and discovering the many unique scarecrow creations set up by community members. The trail starts near the Children's Garden on the west side of the Learning Center building and loops around to the scenic Retzer pond. Just keep in mind that trails are unpaved with woodchips and mowed grass, some areas slope, and there's no lighting after dark.
If your family wants to get involved beyond just visiting, you're welcome to build your own scarecrow at home and install it along the trail—completely free and no registration needed. Groups like schools, scouts, churches, and sports teams often participate too. Everyone's encouraged to create something family-friendly. Just remember to follow the guidelines (no violent or gruesome designs), print the provided ID card, and seal it in a bag attached to your scarecrow. Walk-ins are always welcome, and admission is free every day during the event window.
